How to Stay Warm Without a Traditional Heating System

By Dean’s Service

It’s hard enough to stay warm and comfortable during a cold spell, but it is even harder when your heating system is not working properly. Here are a few tips to keep you warm while you are waiting to have your heating system repaired or replaced.

Layers, Layers, and More Layers!

That’s right, bundle up my friend. Layer your clothing, and wear those sweaters that grandma knit for you at Christmas. Don’t forget to wear your warm, fuzzy socks too. Those added layers will help keep you warm while you wait for the professionals to fix your heating system.

Hot Beverages and Foods

This is a perfect time to make homemade soup or stew. Make sure to drink a hot beverage as well. Hot chocolate always tastes great on a chilly day. The warm fluids and foods will help warm you up from the inside out. It is also a great time to do some baking. Using the oven will add some heat to your room, and the warm baked goods will make you feel warmer when you eat them.

Get Physical

You may need to get moving to warm up a bit. It might be a good time for a workout, or maybe a little dancing. Physical activity raises your heart rate and warms up your body. It may also help you pass the time while you are waiting for your system to be repaired.

Electrical Appliances

Heater still not working? It’s time to use the electric blankets, the electric mattress pad, and the space heater. Just be sure to use caution when using these appliances, and never leave them unattended as they could start a fire. If you do not have these items, you can also use a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel for warmth.

These tips are great for that in-between time while you’re waiting for your heater to get repaired or replaced, but shouldn’t be used long term. If your heating system is not working the way it should be, or if it’s not working at all, then you should call a New Jersey HVAC specialist to take a look at it.
